Tips for College Students: SAHM Edition

Being a mom is hard enough, and so is being a student! Finding a balance between the two on some days seems impossible. If you ask my son right now what his mama’s job is, he will tell you writing papers! Cracks me up. It does seem like all I do is write papers and answer short answers. When you take online courses, I have notice the pattern is writing! I remember the scantron days, multiple choice tests… but in online school everything is papers or short essays. Makes sense on the academic honesty sides of things for online students, and it works for me since I actually enjoy writing.

So if you’re thinking about going back to school or switching to online courses, here are some tips that I have learned about taking classes online.

1. Fill out a Fasfa and apply for scholarships: there is FREE money there!

Even if you think you don’t qualify for financial aid, fill out a Fasfa anyway! Financial aid has been the reason we have been able to invest in my education.  I actually was denied financial aid when I went back to college, and let me tell you, actually paying for classes taught me to be a responsible student. Since going back, I have had to fight another denial with appeals to the school board! I was finally approved after showing them I was serious about my goals by achieving good grades.

Like anything, trying to get scholarships or financial aid takes A LOT OF WORK. The money is out there though, but you will have to dig for it. Outside of my financial aid, I did receive a scholarship for this school year. I applied to many, but got one and I am forever grateful I even got that! To me filling out 100 applications and short essays is worth any amount of free money for my education!

2. Set a schedule

Many of my classes follow a pattern when it comes to due dates. For example: Weekly journals due on Tuesday’s,  Quizzes and Test on Friday’s, and Discussion questions Sunday’s.

I get most of my work done in the morning’s before my son wakes up, or after he goes to bed, and also on Sunday’s! Thank goodness for my husband being so supportive and running the tribe while I step out to study. I hate working on school work Sunday’s especially during the fall, but sometime it is necessary if I don’t get my course work done during the week. While I have to be responsible for my class work, I am also responsible for my son and to be honest there are some days where I just don’t get much done.

If I can stick with my mornings, and Sunday’s, I stay ahead and on track with my course work!

3. Get Organized

Write in your planner (EVERYTHING), keep your papers in order, keep your computer updated, have a decent area to study (a bed is not the place), and keep your home tidy! Life is already stressful enough. You must stay ahead, and prepared for your studies! Things are easily forgotten and the house gets dirty quick.

4.  Respect Time

Life in general is already so busy. We tend to want to rush things and if you’re anything like me, you just want to get college done with! But slow down. Know how many hours you can take, while being an active mom. Don’t forget that just because you took 18 hours last semester, you might want to only take 12 hrs. since you are taking a course you already know will give you hell this semester! Besides when you just try to rush through courses, you aren’t really learning much! Slow down with life, you’ll get there some day.

5.  Take Care of Yourself

As a mom, wife, student, and little farmer…. I tend to think of myself last and usually those are the times I find myself most stressed. While school, your family, and animals are priorities, so are you! You need to make sure you have a good diet, exercise , and get plenty of sleep at night! (I love doing cleaning power hours! Nothing like cleaning with a little cardio)

Enjoy the ride, and know you are very capable of achieving any goal you have set! There is literally nothing stopping you, and with a little dedication you too can become a successful student/ parent! The tools and resources are out there, it is up to you to find them!

Ready to FALL in love

But it is only August and I must be patient, but let it be known that my countdown to fall is ticking down! I start school next week, football is back on TV…. but it is still miserably hot with the humidity staying at 100%. UGH I am so ready for my favorite season, fall! There is nothing better than to be able to still wear shorts but have a long sleeve shirt on. BEST of BOTH worlds!

This fall, my son and I are flying to go see my sister up north and it will be both of our first time on a plane! I have already began planning cute fall outfits and packing organization tips-hacks because I will need all the help I can get since I will be traveling with my son alone and to be organize will help my sanity.

Okay school, Fall semester of 2017: for the first time since coming back, I am only taking 12 hours this semester. Usually I take at least 15 hrs, but I feel like just catching my breath. I don’t know about y’all but I love shopping for school supplies! When you’re in college, you don’t need much. For me to study successfully I have to have a planner, cute pens, highlighters, and flashcards! I have had the same two, one inch binders and folders for the last four semesters. I couldn’t help to think I will be shopping for a kindergartner next time this year! But in all seriousness, I have really enjoyed my 6 week break! It was much needed!

This fall I really want to finish up some projects around the farm. Summer here in Texas has made it impossible to accomplish the outside projects! I am very blessed to have A/C and that is where you will find me, if not lounging by a body of water! I also want to do a small remodel to our master bedroom and bathroom, so keep on the look out for before and after pics! But I will let ya know when that is happening.

What are you most excited for, for this upcoming fall? Or what are your favorite past times during the fall times? Let me know below, and until next time, HUGS FROM TEXAS!

Blog/ Life updates:

I know, I have been very neglectful, but to be fair since the beginning of my summer break I took four courses in six weeks, so I was one busy mama! ONE OF THOSE COURSES WAS ADVANCED ANATOMY (I am a history major and accidentally signed up for this shit show), and I received my first “B” in that class, fml but hey I will take it!

Other big news: I got my IUD out in June, and while we aren’t trying to get pregnant now, we aren’t trying to not get pregnant for baby #2 ;). So perhaps instead of weight-loss updates, soon I will have a baby announcement to make.  Speaking of the devil, WEIGHT LOSS, well guys since I last spoke with you I have lost 3 pounds since may! Hey it isn’t a gain, but in all honesty, my diet has sucked since June and I have stopped swimming (laps)! I will not lie but the great news is, I have been able to maintain my control over my diet. It hasn’t been the cleanest, but I still monitor how much I eat and my binge eating hasn’t come back even though I have slacked on my “clean eating.” The struggle is still so real, and I finally feel like I can breathe!

I promise to get back on the wagon again…. I have no excuses.

Until next update- with love from Texas,

I can see the light

I am in my final week of my three-week mini Spanish course (praise Jesus, I will never do that again) and then I will be entering the next six weeks taking another nine hours…. At least I will have the last six weeks of summer to relax!

I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT IS JUNE! Time flies when you’re an adult. I just wish it would freeze for a minute.. With that being said, The first means UPDATE DAY!!! So here we go…

I’m not going to get somewhere and say, ‘OK, I’m done.’ Success is never final; I’ll just keep on going. The same way as failure never being fatal. Just keep going. I’m going to the stars and then past them.

Hi y’all! I’m coming to you from my bathtub. Yes that’s right, I’m soaking in some hot water and my child is napping…. it has been pouring rain since last night and I woke up to Aunt Flo arriving a week early bringing with her major cramps!!!

Life updates:

I started a three-week mini course and right as that finishes I’m taking nine hours the first four weeks of the summer….. why?! don’t ask me, but I tend to love stresssssss.

Farm updates: This week we added three new babies to the farm, and they’re so precious!

I also realized after bringing them home, they needed to be separated from our rambunctious bucks so I had to think fast and create a fence line…… Sunday afternoon was spent building this not so pretty, but pretty much free fenceline:

I still need to finish painting the chicken coop and build the overhang, but who focuses on one project at a time?!?

Anyway, I hope this week treats you well! After this bath, I want to take a nap but not sure if that will happen! Today is just not going to be a productive day but guess what, I don’t mind!!
Hugs from Texas,

Thursday: Another Q&A

Hi Y’all!!! Friends..

There are no such thing as strangers, only friends who haven’t met yet. 😉

If you don’t know me… well buckle up you’re about to get to know some of me, and if you have been reading my blog, I hope you already get a feel of who I am. Plus, I have noticed… Thursday’s I seem to post Q&A’S… AT first it was not planned but I guess I am unoriginal on Thursday’s. Sorry.

While very unoriginal, I always love reading q&a’s, I am not sure why but people’s answers you can always search into their histories. Okay enough ranting here are 25 questions….

1. What is your middle name?

2. Share your favorite subject in high school.

Swimming, or anything athletic… other than that I made good grades but school was social for me… I just somehow was smart, thank you mom and dad, and managed to pull off  graduating in the top (in the very back of the top) part of my class.. ha.

3. What is your Favorite drink?

Water with LEMON!

4. What is your favorite song at the moment?

Hmmm… this is very hard because music is life. it is always on and my playlist is a HUGE MELTING POT of genres! I do not discriminate, especially not music. I always identify with every song, or find ways to!

But here are a few songs always on repeat:

My name is Human- Highly Suspect

You Don’t Own Me- Grace

5. What would you (or have you) name your children?

Our son’s name is Hunter…

When we have other children or adopt…. We have talked about several names

Boy: Parker, or my fav, Fischer (but he would probably be made fun of), Conner

Girl: Gemma Nicole, or there was another name my husband picked that I liked but I can’t remember, whoops.

6. Have you  participated in any sports?

yes: Swimming, track, volleyball, dancing, cheerleading

7. What is your favorite book?

8. What is your favorite color?

9. What is your favorite animal?

Dogs and Chickens, but dogs more

10. What is your favorite perfume?

I think I answered this already but

11. What is your favorite holiday?

Is it possible to not like holidays?!  maybe the fourth of july because it is in the summer and I love the summer!

12. On a scale from 1 – 10, rate your childhood.

100! Thank you mom and dad! They always put their kids first! They made sure we were raised with respect and lots of responsibility. They trusted us enough to have our own space, but they still monitored us. They loved us unconditionally and always stuck to their word.  My parents were firm believers in: If you tell us the truth, there is no way we can punish you (to an extent) but the minute you lie, its done and that trust is broken. I don’t know how, but my parents raised us to be truthful and open with them.. they were the best parents and though my dad can’t read this anymore, if my mom ever comes across this blog, know, I love you more than you ever know and who I am as a mother, wife, student and woman is a direct reflection of you and Dad’s love. Thank you for my life, y’all did more than enough, and one day I am going to take care of you when I get the chance to!

13. Have you been out of the country?

14. Do you speak any different languages?

I can speak Spanish. Enough that I can ease drop sometimes and know what people around me are saying. I can listen to Spanish and understand more than I can speak… my brain hasn’t learned how to process that yet. I have just completed 8 hours of Spanish and have another 6 to do… moving into intermediate Spanish.. hahaha.

15. Do you have any siblings?

Yes, four.

16. What is your favorite store?

Hobby Lobby!

17. What is your favorite restaurant?

Lupe Tortillas

18. Did you like school?

I did

19. What’s the last compliment you got?

lol my poor husband..

“your legs are looking good”

I hate being complimented, I know its my insecurities… like coming from my hubby, sometimes I feel like he only says things to make me feel good.. even though he might mean it… he has called me out literally last night for never accepting his compliments. It is something I need to work on.

and yes, i have noticed a lot of changes in my thighs… but I still don’t feel good enough to be complimented yet.. if that makes sense.

20. What is your favorite movie?

21. What are some of your favorite tv shows?

The Walking Dead. I hate TV it is all shit now.

22. PC or mac?

23. What phone do you have?

Iphone 7+

24. How tall are you?

25. Do you have any pets?

Dogs, chickens, pigs, goats, ducks.

Happy Friday Y’all!

My Husband & I have always lived very spontaneously. Since we first started dating we have always just woken up with a wild hair to go live life and we pack up and take random road (sometimes day) trips . Yesterday was no different.

We wake up with our son right in between us and H can’t believe his Daddy is right next to him. He ask, “is it Saturday?!” It was confusing to his little three-year old mind. Normally, my husband leaves for work around 6 AM if not a little sooner. Yesterday, he was actually called to work in the city we lived in so he was able to sleep in. When he checked his jobs for the day, wellll it was a slow day so he called his co-worker and asked him if he wanted his few jobs and the guy welcomed the work. So my hubby and I were like what do you want to do today, I knew the laundry needed to be done and I needed to write a paper that was due [today], so I was excited at the thought of his extra help! That’s when our son suggested going to the beach. Next thing I know, it was around 11 AM and we were in Galveston, Texas in Target buying kite’s and sandcastle equipment!

Yesterday wasn’t my paper’s due date, so it wasn’t the “do” date either hehe. Oh well, I will get it done by midnight tonight. We had so much fun! I didn’t take photos, we left our phones in the truck when we were playing at the beach. We flew kites, played a game of family soccer (my husband cheats), and I was able to job two miles next to the Gulf! Plus we stopped at our favorite, FISHTALES and ate crab legs (my sons fav). We were home by 8 PM and I was able to get two loads of laundry done!

I am truly blessed to have the relationship I have with both my son and husband. I am so thankful such a strong family bond that we have created. I only hope to raise my son to love unconditionally,  commit wholeheartedly, and to never take life for granted; if given the choice to slow down and treasure a moment, seize it! The world can wait (with responsibility)

In truth I suspect that merely slowing down is not a very satisfying answer. What I need has less to do with my pace of life than my peace of life. At any speed, I crave a deep and lasting inner peace. And if it’s solace I’m after, I don’t need to pace myself like a turtle, change jobs or set up house on a quiet island. It is usually frenetic living, not high energy, that robs my peace of mind.”

Happy Thursday y’all…. YOU want me to hit you with the good news or the bad first?! Okay lets start off by proudly announcing, the scale moved and I officially hit 15 POUNDS gone since 12.30.16! WHATTTT, I am beyond thrilled, though it moved only a pound for the last week, it is still moving and not going back up!

So for my last two-days, oh just wait, my hot water heater broke yesterday which to replace and install cost me a total of $995! My computer cord stopped charging, so I am waiting on Dell to send me a new one. (mind you I just bought this laptop two months ago!), FML. LAST night my son wakes up screaming his ear hurts, so off to the doctor we go this A.M., and I am pretty sure it’s an ear infection. LETS ADD THE TOPPING TO THIS SHIT CAKE NOW, MY DRYER BROKE THIS MORNING!!!!!!!!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSE to go have a nice “relaxing vaca” with just the hubby this weekend, with all of this shit going on….. We never take time for ourselves and the minute we spend money on a very nice hotel, everything wants to break…. breaking my heart I will tell ya.

Of course, my struggles are not near as bad as others. My stuff can be replaced, but it is so frustrating to deal with all of this. I didn’t sleep last night and I have three test and a paper to write by midnight tomorrow. I swear some days I feel so good, but today my anxiety is so high! I can feel it in my hands. Do you ever get that?! I clench my fist a lot when I am stressed! I can do this. I can do this. I can do this. How many times do I need to think this, until I believe myself. Needless to say, I AM taking a break today and not working out this A.M.!  OH WELL…. off to the doctors we go!

Have a blessed day y’all!

With much love,

Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There’s going to be stress in life, but it’s your choice whether you let it affect you or not.

Trader Joe’s

If ya haven’t figured out Trader Joe’s is my love. It is like the grocery store version of Target. I go in for one thing and walk out with everything. Everything I buy is organic and is so much more AFFORDABLE than produce at the local Kroger’s or HEB.  Other than Trader Joe’s, for food I shop at Kroger. I love to coupon and Kroger’s is my hook up, but I tend to only buy bacon, maybe fresh gulf shrimp, laundry & cleaning supplies, and my boy’s foods they love. (they love Oreos and chocolate milk).

*Oh side note, when I say “boys” I mean my three-year old son and my Husband, who has the diet of a three year old.

My local Trader Joe’s

It takes me about thirty minutes to drive here, but it is so worth it. I bring my cooler bags for all the frozen stuff & meat. Saturday when I went, my husband stayed home with my son and for once I got to shop KID FREE! It was a treat let me tell ya! This is what I picked up:

Produce included:

-2 avocados ($1.49 each)

– Organic Grapes ($3.99)

-2 bags of organic lemons ($1.69 a bag)

-bananas ($.19 each)

-2 Bags of organic power greens ($1.99 a bag)

-Organic Green onions ($.99)

-Sauerkraut ($3.99)

-Organic Mushrooms ($2.29)

-Organic jalapeno ($1.29)

-Organic Zucchini ($2.99)

-Minced Garlic ($1.69)

-Ghee (I belive it was $3.99)

Meats Included:

-Hamburger Patties ($4.49)

-Pepperoni’s ($2.99)

-Organic cage-free chicken ($15.20)

I did get some bacon at Kroger’s along with shrimp this week. I also tried those pepperoni’s and to be honest, they weren’t my fav. and probably won’t be buying that kind again. It had added smoke flavor, which I didn’t read on the package, and the taste wasn’t for me. With the Texan’s and Cowboy’s playing this weekend, my husband wanted to grill! I had one HB patty with some yellow mustard, pickles and mixed greens. It was fabulous. Along with that I did treat myself to TWO jalapeno poppers with bacon and dairy free cream cheese. YUM.  I forgot to take a picture of this cream cheese, but this is the one I got from Trader Joe’s. (Thanks google for the pic) I purchased it for $2.49trader-joes-vegan-cream-cheese-review.jpg

Frozen foods Included:

I have tons of asparagus (another veggie I love) already in the freezer so I didn’t need to pick up much.

-brocoli ($1.99)

-Fajita veggies ($2.99)

-Veggie breakfast links ($3.79)

-Clarified Butter

-Organic Power Greens

– & my favorite protein of all time, chicken!
